Comment on LaCour (2014), “The Echo Chambers are Empty”
نویسنده
چکیده
This note describes a number of anomalies uncovered during an attempt to replicate the text-based measures of ideology in Michael LaCour’s “The Echo Chambers Are Empty: Direct Evidence of Balanced, Not Biased, Exposure To Mass Media.” The recent publicity surrounding the retraction of Michael LaCour and Don Green’s Science paper on canvassing in gay marriage referenda campaigns reminded me of an experience I’d had (unsuccessfully) attempting to replicate some of LaCour’s other work last year. In light of the disturbing revelations regarding the Science paper, I decided to investigate more fully. This note describes the results of that exercise. Simply put, despite using the same dataset of news show transcripts and implementing the same method described in his paper, my results are not at all comparable to LaCour’s. LaCour’s text-based measures of news show ideology reported in “The Echo Chambers Are Empty” are very likely fabricated. ∗Thanks to Gaurav Sood for helpful comments.

While it is important to support the development of methods for public participation, we argue that this should not be at the expense of a broader consideration of the role of public participation. We suggest that a rights based approach provides a framework for developing more meaningful approaches that move beyond public participation as synonymous with consultation to value the contribution ...

Decentralisation has been described as an empty concept that lacks clarity. Yet there is an enduring interest in the process of decentralisation within health systems and public services more generally. Many claims about the benefits of decentralisation are not supported by evidence. It may be useful as an organising framework for analysis of health systems but in this context it lacks conceptu...

This study explores the geographic dependencies of echo-chamber communication on Twitter during the Brexit referendum campaign. We review the literature on filter bubbles, echo chambers, and polarization to test five hypotheses positing that echo-chamber communication is associated with homophily in the physical world, chiefly the geographic proximity between users advocating sides of the campa...
متن کاملOnline Exploration, Content Choice & Echo Chambers: An Experiment
In this experiment, we create an online search environment where users explore the TED Talks collection, and choose a talk to watch. As users search in this environment, they can separately control two search dimensions topic and popularity. Furthermore, in topic-based searches, we randomly block/show popularity information. We ask: what types of users are most likely to get caught in a content...

Sanderson et al’s realist review of strategic purchasing identifies insights from two strands of theory: the economics of organisation and inter-organisational relationships. Our findings from a programme of research conducted by the RESYST (Resilient and Responsive Health Systems) consortium in seven countries echo these results, and add to them the crucial area of org...
